I’m on a mission to rebuild a 1910 English sailing yacht called Tally Ho. Designed by Albert Strange in 1909, she is a well-known and important historic vessel - but after many adventures she was left in a remote port in Oregon to rot for decades, despite some valiant attempts to rescue her. I bought her and moved her to the Olympic Peninsular earlier this year, and am now rebuilding her from the keel up. Eventually I hope to sail her back to the UK.

Interior woodwork - creating a functional living space on Tally Ho
You are such a planner - the trip has to be all planned already! Where are you going?
I saw the rebuild of the capstan by Keith Rucker and the whole Tally Ho project and I am truly impressed. It seems like a case of the right people coming together and the right time and what you (Leo) where able to do (including ALL the people that were there to help you) is truly amazing!
Awsome leo . Have you teeth become American. ?
Must feel good to have all systems shipshape and ready to go. Congrats to the team and cheers!
What did the grounding mark look like?
I would like a full video dedicated to the capstan only. It is only fitting.
Very enjoyable. The boat couldn't be anymore beautiful.
I am curious why you do all of your maneuvering in the marina with the diesel engine and not electric. It would seem that you would have more control with electric in that you can turn slower revs if needed.
Wouldn't the smaller prop provide less regen though?
Great explanation of how you worked through the problem, Leo. Did you end up with about 20x16 instead of 22x17? Your comment that the new hub is a little smaller, so the effective blade diameter reduction is less, was key. Just out of curiosity, if you ever do decide to change the (?planetary) reduction gear to the PRM 500 in 2.57:1, how accessible is the gear, could it be switched out or would a new box be needed, and could you do it all without pulling the cockpit, engine, etc? (maybe just the regeneration motor?) This diagram at 27:33 from episode 87 shows it pretty well. ua-cam.com/video/xohxmwPfctg/v-deo.htmlsi=XdKhwoJ_xu9kF5-o&t=1653 Thanks again for sharing the process so thoroughly.
Everything is lining up! Expert help is what gets it done! Good news all around!
Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam ." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window ? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." Mrs Richards: "I'm not satisfied. But I shall stay. But I expect a reduction." Basil: "Why?! Because Krakatoa's not erupting at the moment ?"
A question... Since the Max Prop self feathers when sailing with no torque from the shaft, how does the regeneration work? Is there a way to lock the feathering OFF from inside the hull? Didn't see any means to do that! ???
Leo, great job on your due diligence process and continuing to do things the right way, Classy! Cheers 🍻
I think I have already seen this episode, well I liked it again.
May the Maiden of the sea break out her sail with the fair winds following sea's lol
I watched all of Keith's video's rebuilding the Capstan. He did an excellent job, it was a complicated task that needed a lot of planning and many hours of machining that required most of his shop equipment. From Keith's video's I got the impression the engineering specs did not included a detailed anti corrosion strategy (of course I could be wrong). The original top casting was so corroded together that it had to be broken apart. Keith not having a good painting source requiring you to disassemble the Capstan for painting gives you the opportunity to ensure every detailed metal surface is ether painted, greased or coated with anti-seize. Insuring that after many decades of salt water exposure each individual part of the Capstan can be easily disassembled.
I saw 'Adix' coming into Oban bay the other day under sail, looked spectacular. Didn't know you'd crewed on her until I looked her up on Google. Really enjoying the videos - Amazing work
Hi.. Been watching since you started realy good workmanship.. So impressed.. Just a thought I've not seen any grease nipples fitted to captain.. Hope I've not put the cart before the horse to have to after you fitted it in place would not be as easy as when its looking at you.. Great shipwrights.. Best on UA-cam
Leo, did I hear you say warder? 💦🙄🏴😅😂😎
I have a spot in Copenhagen Habour you can anchor in all summer <3
It seems Tally Ho's navigation stern light needs to be at a higher position as the rudder is blocking its view from certain port angles. See 13:37 time in the video.
Hello Leo is this new propellor also able to make enough electricity while sailing??
Is this a repost of yesterday's video but slightly changed?
I'm curious why you painted the prop. More friction with the water?
Can you lock the propeller blades from inside the boat, so you can generate electricity while sailing in the future?
500 thousand subscribers!! Half a million landmark is a big deal 🎉😎
Congratulations with 500 k !
Congratulations on halfway to a million subscribers, Leo
What's everyone's Tally Ho tipple tonight? Scapa The Orcadian 12yr single malt from Orkney here.
Fast enough to waterski?☺☺
How does the electric drive/charge system react to the prop change?
Beautiful prop! How is the feathering activated?
Oops, just saw that it is passive with the water pressure or the centrifugal force when motoring.
You're exided I'm exided
Congratulations on 500K!. I watched Keith's vidos on the capstan restoration along with Windy Hill Foundry's casting of the top piece. Keith's dedication, skill and patience perfectly matched that of Leo and his crew.
I love this channel, great people/team, great skills, woodworking and boats too. My favourite things! One of the other commenters mentioned the Adix, so I watched a video saw Leo in charge of an incredible 212 foot schooner... Wow!!! link to video: ua-cam.com/video/Ro1ahZy7mzg/v-deo.htmlsi=_xWduv1_N-G0mVMG
i dont think I have seen ol' Keith any happier than when he declared the capstan project finished and ready to ship. He did not wipe his brow dramatically or anything but having that many variables finally fitted together was an obvious relief , it is one thing to think or even know things can work vs having them all put together. Gratz all around for that pretty amazing bit of restoration. PS. you can hear that the prop is in tune with the engine Vs out of tune while over propped , there was a harmonic present in the latter case that is gone once the pitch was corrected.
That was pretty funny yesterday whatever happened, it went away whilst watching🤤 So sweet to see the capstan back home after all that work!
*Congrats Tally Ho Team on 500K Subscriptions!* Only 3hrs since this video published and the view counter is rolling like crazy!
Why was this uploaded and then taken down a few minutes later?
23:36 🎼let’s do the Time Warp again 🎵 Pelvic Thrust level Infinite, Unlocked
Decison on the prop-gearbox issue makes perfect sense to me. That's something about this channel anyway, that Leo is able to present all the stuff that is going in on in a very understandable fashion.
I wonder if enough vibration of the right frequencies would wiggle loose that knot. Probably not in any practical situation, but the physics of the rope work y'all are doing is fascinating.
probably a silly question lol, but how long does it take for the fresh prop to look like the one taken off? i know its like surface level cosmetic stuff but im just curious how long it takes for them to lose that shiny new look lol.
I knew it would all be good! Summer cruise in the queue!
Hi Leo, Glad the Gearbox Prop. issue I’d sorted at least for the present. One thing that troubled me with the Light Boards, should not the ‘insides’ be painted Matt Black, I believe we have been required to do this in the UK for a number of years.
Is the TravelLift a per hour fee? or per operation? Very curious how that part of the port logistics works.
Was Bob running the wiring inside the rope?
Funny enough I was watching both channels already when suddenly the capstan materialized at Keiths place.
Congrats
